if a "null" (zero) character were there, it _might_ cause problems
by causing a premature end of string (hiding the remainder).

one way to find control chars on a Mac is BBEdit/BBE Lite
via the Text/Zap Gremlins command (if you do this after a Save,
you'll then see if any changes were made)
