I had this problem with my newton that stolen in Michigan. Its a problem
with the mechanism, and try as I might I was unable to solve it. I think
mine was the upper slot.

You can send it for repair, but it won't be cheap.

I was able to get a finger nail on the edge where the metal meets the
plastic end cap on the card and pull it out. It is not locked. It will
pull out.
