No, you couldn't have. MD-Data media is ever so slightly different than
MD-Audio media. The two are (were) not compatible with each other.

By the way, I'm not interested in selling my MD-Data unit; I use it to
play audio MD's.

Trust me, you don't want it anyway. Slow, and (at least on the Mac) the
disc drivers weren't very good and were not compatible with disk repair
utilities (that's another reason I stopped using it for data).
