Regarding the question of to load the driver or not to load the driver, I have been using a Megahertz XJ1144 with XJack in Newt for everything - 'Net, e-mail, faxing - and have only been using the '14.4 Normal' setting under modem preferences. Seems to be fine, but...
But as always, it is far preferable to use the driver built for that modem than a generic substitute. I would consider using the '14.4 Normal' setting a fall-back position if you can't get the driver from the two places Kenny suggested. I'm headed to DNUG right now, myself.
