FirstClass was basicially a graphical BBS that started out on the Mac, but
these days most servers run under Windows NT. It has a "desktop and
folders" metaphor, allowing for exchange of messages in forums, archiving,
file transfer, forms, chat, etc etc between users of the system. These
days it is being marketed as "FirstClass Intranet Server" because of the
new web-based features introduced in version 5. FCIS is published by
SoftArc, http://www.softarc.com

(Wow, that sounded like advertising copy, but I don't work for SoftArc -
but I did go through the hell of supporting FirstClass for 3 years.)
