This might be closer than you think. /. did had a story on subdermal

And this will get around the problem of cables corroding in your
body. Apparently wires implanted in paralyzed people in the early 80s
that enabled them to walk with the help of electrical pulses from a
computer -- A professor at Wright State did it -- are corroding and
need to be taken out (they did a spot about it on the local news some
time ago).
