The Newton subsidiary was never sold off. It was always a wholly-owned subsidiary of Apple (and thus, funded by Apple), so the decision to restructure and get out of the Newton business (and not spend money in continuing development of those products) was, for a company in crisis and disarray, a simple and straightforward one.
