It doesn't. Not at all. In my MP130 handwriting recognition increases
the current sucked out of the batteries by about 50 percent sometimes.
You can expect an even bigger increase if you do things like using the
modem, serial port, ir port, speaker etc.

They would, and they could. But you'd not get the maximum capacity out of
them
as the charge curve for NiMH's is different from the one for NiCd's.
