There's a difference between announcing the stop of developement and the stop of support for existing customers of the product. Apple still supports Newtons, i.e. they will still repair them, etc. I assume that when they stop supporting the Newton, it will be because it is not worth the cost... but the cost can't be very high since they'll fix anything/everything for a reasonable low flat rate.
