I went ahead and cleaned everything out with a business card. That didn't get the screen to respond. So, with much fear and trepidation I opened the case to confirm the wires from the screen to the board hadn't been pinched or severed (they hadn't).
Which means it is going into service.
I did take some photos of the logic board, which I plan to send to Info-Newt.
