There's a little tab inside the 100's battery compartment that gets
pushed in by the rechargeable pack but not by the alkaline battery cage.
 Some folks here use a thin piece of cardboard to push it in and allow
charging inside the Newton.

I'd stick with the external, though, personally, just in case.
