I bought the Keyspan adaptor. It does exactly what it purports to do;
emulate a serial connection on an iMac. The Keyspan has two ports
available: One emulates a printer port (which has my StyleWriter 2500
jacked into it), and the other a vanilla serial port.

Some problems:

1. The port can become 'occupied' by another application, requiring a
reset of the port from within the software control panel. Not a big
deal, but sometimes annoying. Make sure that you've got NCU fired up
with the proper port preferences selected before you try to connect from
the Newt.

2. You need to re-install the Communications Toolbox software. MacOS 9
does not include the critical ADSP extension that is necessary to
establish connections over the serial port.

3. BIG problem, in my mind: As far as I can tell, none of these adapters
supports AppleTalk via serial. (As good a reason as any to try and dig
up an ethernet card, MP2K owners...) However, I have yet to test this
after re-installing the ADSP software.

Bottom Line:

They work, but not totally seamlessly. The lack of AppleTalk support is
a real shame.

Cheers,

Jim.
