Tim,

Isn't there a pkg that emulates Sony TV remote controls? I recall reading
about it in Pen Computing in late 96 (I think). Since Sony remotes are all
compatible (same pulse lengths and IR freq.) , you could hack the code a
little bit to get the minidisc remote you want. I have several articles on
IR remotes (from Popular Electronics?) somewhere in my unfiled collection
(I cant put my hands on it). The article talks about the freq. of the
signal, and the length of the pulse and their sequences for the generic and
brand specific remote controls. If you have a way of capture the pulse
sequence from your current minidisc remote, then you can map out the signal
for on/off, begin program command, the various elements in the title
program (date, author, etc.), the asii characters, and the end program
command. For capture you can use a simple a IR collector, a power source,
and an oscilloscope, or a signal capture board in a PC or MAC. Try you
local university's physics department. You could then use the existing
Newton Sony remote program to generate the IR pulses for you after you
figure out how to interface with it. I think that someone who is up on
Newtonscript or Basic (which ever the remote program is in) could do this
program in a weekend.

For a description of the SIRCS (Sony IR...) protocol, see

Try the AMUG Shareware CD. You can try 'ShowMate2'. It is more powerful.
It let you control/program your own remote control in Newton.
