Yes, it is true! I have used Newt'sCape to login to my Yahoo mail account and send and receive e-mail. I should warn You that it is not the "Fastest" e-mail experience, but It works.
Before upgrading to a uMP2K I was using an MP 130 with Avi's Back drop and sufferred from the disappearing backlight button as well. You did not say If you have installed the latest system update for the MP 130. From memory that was the problem in my case - doing a hard reset seemed to delete the system update some of the time. I Cannot remember the URL for the updates but It should be on the FAQ at:
