NTLK newton serial console

well, i hope i'm still subscribed, after all the list hullaballoo lately.

anyhoo, my question for all the newton-using folk on the list is
this: how many of you have been able to connect your newtons to a
linux box?

specifically, what i'm trying to do is use my mp2000 with pt100 <an
excellent telnet/vt100 emulator> and a serial cable, as a serial
console for my headless linux machine.

i am able to connect via the serial connection at a variety of
speeds, but all i manage to get is a bunch of garbage on the newton
side and a bunch of debugging lines like this:

sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0xa5fbe62c> <pcomp> <accomp>]

on the linux side. it seems like the problem is the ppp protocol on
the linux box is trying to autoconfigure, and the newton doesn't know
what to do with those messages.

any help would be greatly appreciated.
