I use a diode in one of my panels to avoid drain (on the bigger one) but
for use
with the Newt, no. The KISS panel for the Newt also did not have diodes or
anything more
sophisticated. Using NIMH 1600 m/Ah AA batteries for years - no problems
with Newts or battery life.
