Basically, the LunaMail software connect to your ISP and starts a shell
session. A shell session *isn't* a PPP session, nor a SLIP one. It's
just a remote command line login shell.

Depending on the actions you're performing, those are translated into
command line text commands that are understood by the shell and carried
on.

Initially, some years ago, almost all internet accounts were provided
with a shell access. Then, it's been gradually removed from the various
offerings. If you're thinking seriously about this kind of connection,
you should make sure that your ISP is providing shell access. Most
don't.
