In keeping with the (occasionally) international nature of this list it should be made clear that this reference is to "American Football".

Football is played by two teams of eleven (unpadded) players over ninety minutes at the end of which the French always win. (with apologies to Kevin Keegan and Germany).

Calling that other stop-start marathon "football" is like calling the Newt black - or though it sort of is in this light.
