First of all, these instructions are for Outlook Express 5.02 for Macintosh
(be sure to check your version #!), not Windows. I don't know if Outlook
Express 5 for Windows has this capability for certain, though I would assume
so. Presuming that it does, I would also guess that the instructions would
be at least slightly different with a Windows computer. But here's the Mac
instructions:

(If you are further along in this process, then just pick up where you need
to...these instructions are starting from the "ground up".)

1) If you haven't done so already, create a folder somewhere within Outlook
Express for Newton Talk messages to be stored. (Mine is located in the
"Inbox" and is called "Newton Talk". If you need instructions on how to do
this part, email me directly to my personal email address, and I'll give you
a boost.)

2) Select "Mailing List Manager" from the "TOOLS" menu.

3) If you haven't created one yet, click on the "New" button to create a
new mailing list for Newton Talk. (Otherwise, select your appropriate
Newton Talk mailing list and click the "Edit" button.)

4) Set the list address as "newtontalk@planetnewton.com".

5) Choose to file messages in the folder that you established in step 1.
(If it does not appear in the pop-up menu, then select "choose folder" and
then select it.)

6) Make certain that the check box that says "Enabled" is checked. All
other options on this screen are user preferences, though mine are set to
NOT file messages that I send in that folder, and rules are NOT applied to
the mailing list. (If you also have a folder set up to receive
Apple-specific messages like I do, it might be important to select the "Do
not apply rules" option, because otherwise, individual NTLK posts which have
the words "Apple" or "Macintosh" in the subject headings, for example, may
inadvertently be diverted to your "Apple" folder instead.)

7) Click on the "Advanced" tab at the top of this window.

8) Under the heading "Actions on List Messages", check the box that says
"Burst digests into individual messages". This is the important one. All
others are user preferences, though mine are as follows:

        a) Delete copies of incoming messages that I send to the list: YES
        b) Delete original after bursting: YES
        c) WHEN REPLYING, Override the default behavior: YES
                                                Always reply to the sender's
address: YES

All other options are not selected.

* I really like the option to override the default behavior of the list and
always reply to the sender's address instead of the entire mailing list.
This actually gives me the OPTION of replying to the individual user
privately, OR to post a reply to the entire list.

Whenever I see a message that requires a reply, if I want to reply privately
to the individual user, I click on "Reply". If I want to post a message
that the entire list can read, however, I click on "Reply ALL". (This will
also send a copy to the originator of the message to make certain that they
don't miss the important post which was meant specifically for them.)

9) Once you click "OK", you have a mailing list manager set up to filter
the Newton Digest into a specific folder, and then burst the digest into its
individual messages, deleting the original digest. This is the equivalent
of receiving all individual posts to the NTLK mailing list, except you are
receiving them ALL AT ONCE, once a day, instead of all the livelong day.

Hope the above helps!

CM

The box said "Windows 95 or better" so I bought a Macintosh.
