Hmmm. When you get rid of the system soup, you usually get rid of all
prefs, since most, if not all, applications store their prefs whether in
the first entry of the system soup, or in a separate entry of the system
soup.

So, I would say that if you restore after a hard reset and don't include
the system soup when you restore, you basically deleted the prefs!
