Hey, thanks for the memory jog. PNM's SetAutodock:

SetAutoDock NOS 2.0
                   This softwares allows to force the autodock option. It
is only useful in extreme problems. Install it on a card, and insert the
card into the Newton in trouble. Then you can plug the serial cable to do a
backup with NCU.

Sound like it will do what you want, if the Newton isn't severely broken. SBM's util might perhaps be more robust but IIRC you have to register it to get your data back off the card.
