it was for a charging cradle.

plastic, with a small knobbly bit on the top righthand side containing
a pen well, some ducting on the right/bottom for the appletalk/serial
cable, and a power jack on the back for the standard newt power
supply.

under where the newt (110/120/130) sat was a charger well for a second
battery pack, and down the front were two spring-loaded metal pins
that mated with those two contacts to charge the newt's batteries
while it sat in the cradle.

i've got a couple i could be persuaded to sell if anyone's keen.
original packaging, one in pre-130 purple, the other 130
silver/black. the cradles appear identical.

the eMate has two similar contacts, but the 2000 & 2100 were only able
to be charged via the interconnect port.

it's a source of continued curiosity for me why apple never released
(or developed?) a cradle for the 2k series. the use of the
interconnect port was perhaps partly to blame? the only thing i
really envy about the pilots is their simple, sensible docking port.
