I am sorry that I wasted your time with my idiocy. The whole time,
the answer was printed on the bottom of the charging station! It
says:

What the lights mean:
Amber: Battery pack is recharging, or Newton has no rechargeable battery pack.
Green: Battery pack is recharged.

The Newton also restarted when I put the pack in again (while typing
this), so that is no longer a problem. If anyone can help me with my
card problem, then all would be back to normal.
