It was my impression and experience that the Java VNC client is designed
to always run as an applet. So when you download an applet in a browser,
the security model is such that you can only make TCP connections back to
the host you downloaded the applet from. All VNC servers (AFAIK) have a
built-in HTTP server on port 5800? that serves up this applet.

Hrm... when I started writing this it sounded like it might help you solve
your problem. Maybe it still does :)
