Sam,

The glare you speak of has very little to do with the color of
the backlight and a lot to do with the texture of the front
surface.
The problem is that to see the display clearly, one needs a
clear (therefore shiny) texture. In order to cut the glare, one
needs a matte texture. This would cut down on the visibility
however.

Changing the color of the backlight may make your Newton look
better but, unfortunately, won't cut the glare.
