I can definitely say that you would not see such an error message after a long long period having the Newt totally unpowered.
(assuming that there is no other problem) I got one which has been stored for more than 4 years without power.

james,

i had this problem about 12 months ago with my mp2000. i was using it
online and it rebooted and that message came up. i took it to apple
(australia) and they replaced it with a new unit for free.

i have since read about this condition *i think* - apparently it happens
when the newton is left without power for an extended period of time. i
still don't know why it happened to me though since my newt was fine one
minute and messed up the next.

you might be able to get apple to replace it - but there has been lots of
talk here lately about apple being difficult and speculation that perhaps
they have runout of replacement units.

i would say 50/50. anybody else?
