The NewtonOS natively only support some kind of linear cards. See the
FAQ for more details (e.g.
http://www.guns-media.com/mirrors/newton/faq/) or Carsten Lemmen's
excellent page: http://www.mac3.de/sig/newton/memory_cards.html.

The NewtonOS doesn't natively support ATA cards (e.g. Usual PCMCIA
flash cards, and Compact Flash, Memory Sticks or Smart Media with
adapter). I hope this will be fixed within days (I'm doing all I can
in spite of the temperature).

(btw, I may have found a way to handle brutal removal of ATA cards)
