Different countries, different laws.
At least in most parts of the EU a private safety copy is allowed - and we
pay for this right the moment we buy scanners, copiers, audio equipment etc.
Hollywood learned it the hard way - the crack of their DVD copy protection
system is not illegal because its the only way to do a safety copy.
