FWIW, I've found that trying a device in a shop is not the same as using
it day to day, to accomplish those tasks that you need to do.
The iPaq becons to be used. It calls out to you, with that nice display
and cool look. However, once you really begin to use it, vice trying out
the bells and wistles, it begins to disappoint.
If you focus on the Media Player, and other items such as this, the
Pocket PC devices are way cool. I should note that the Palm OS devices
are not that far behind, if any in this regard. The new Sony Clie and
Handera 330 are super devices as well.
However, focus on those day to day activities, and the Pocket PC can
become frustrating to use. Really give it a workout. Enter a bunch of
ToDo's and calendar events with overlapping times and such. Maybe you'll
see what I mean.
With a 240x320 vice 160x160 display, you would think that a Pocket PC
device would show a lot more information in the month calendar view, for
example. But it doesn't. Surprising.
The Newt, while not perfect, was a great first design. And yes, it's
calendar could use some improvement IMHO. However, after recently adding
TimeTrax to my Newt, I now have no reason for a desktop calendar. It
does everything that I need. I no longer take calendars, notes, or a
notepad to meetings. Only handouts/briefing slides. The Newt has been
an enabler for me.
Anyhow, my intent is not to bash the Pocket PC OS which has greatly
improved over the years. My intent is to highlight that using a quick
tryout of any device will not give you the true picture of what it can do
for you.
I mean, how long does it take to show someone all the cool functions on a
Newt?! :-)
