You can use standard rechargeable batteries in your
Newt130. And here's the bonus! If they're NiCads, then
you can charge them inside your Newton 130 as well!
Here's the trick. Take out your batteries. Notice that
little square button (or bump) between the 2nd the 3rd
batteries? This is the indicator that tells the Newton
that you have rechargeable batteries installed.
Fashion some kind of wedge that will keep this button
depressed when you have rechargeable batteries
installed and viola! you can charge NiCad batteries in
your Newt (I wouldn't recommend any other battery
types...the original wall plug and internal circuitry
inside the Newt may not be able to handle any increase
in current requirements that other batteries may need)
The way I did this mod was to take some ordinary
scotch tape. I rolled up a thin wad, flattened it,
placed it underneath the batteries with the force of
the batteries keeping the tape wedge held against the
button and the button remained depressed. You can
depress the button in other ways, but consider that
the Newton may already be depressed knowing that it
had been discontinued so many years ago and that there
are no brethern in the wings waiting to take it's
place...
