Carbon alone makes for a big difference, but it's not the only one.
Quartz (and thus PDF) replacing Display PostScript, Aqua, the seamless
integration of classic apps, not to mention a myriad of details. There's
no denying that Mac OS X owes much to Rhapsody, but Mac OS X marked an
important change in direction with regard to Apple's OS policy -- at a
time when they realized that without developer support, Rhapsody would
lead nowhere -- and should thus be considered a different OS. Or, as a
matter of fact, not even that, as it was never finished (just like the
ill-fated Copland).
