Re: [NTLK] IRDA compatibility with Newt and Dell Laptop

Don't confuse "infrared" with IrDA. They are not the same thing.

IrDA is a set of protocols implemented for infrared data transmissiton
by the Infrared Developer's Association (IrDA).

(It's also "IrDA", not "IRDA")

The "Sharp IRDA" is not "IRDA" or "IrDA". It's called "ASK", in fact.

There should be info on this in the FAQ.

Older Newton's only support the Sharp ASK infrared protocol. Only the
2000, 2100, eMate and perhaps the OS 2.0 Newtons (can't recall, but I
don't think so) support IrDA. And then, it's a limited subset of the
protocols (you don't HAVE to implement them all.)

You can beam between Newtons. You can PRINT (_not_ beam!) to certain
HP printers via IR (don't recall if that's IrDA, or just IR). Older
Newtons can possibly beam to some older Sharp organizers. That's about
it.

I think that BackTalk (from Smart Dog Software) may have implemented
more of the protocols, too as part of their for support for the Newton
beaming to Palms, phones, etc.

I think Thomas Tempelmann's recent good works with the DIL's may also
have added some more infrared goodies at least to the Mac, and possibly
the PC.

I must admit, though...it's pretty cool that the Newton's IrDA
implementation can actually totally crash Windows machines. Speaks
well of Windows machines, eh? But then, what did we expect from
Windows, after all. One could have fun with this in meetings.... ;-)

I wouldn't blame the Newton, though....it's obviously a bug/lousy
programming the the Windows IrDA driver.
