I recall this being one of the suggested features of a new desktop
metaphor that one of the original Mac developers was working on. I
can't remember her name at the moment, and forgive, but I believe
the tech she was working on was called "piles" :)

But basically, older, less frequently accessed files would shuffle
their way closer to the actual desktop, and would "fade" or get
old-looking, while frequently accessed files would remain near the
top and remain brighter ( despite the flip-flop of these as real
world metaphors )

Might have seen it linked from a Tog article... Can't remember.
