Of all the 130's I had with this symptom I was able to install FixTrax on
only one. Didn't help. The others just shut off even before the operating
system was loaded. Persistance doesn't help here, I sometimes tried it
dozens
of times.
These Newton's even shut off when they are in diagnostic mode, so I doubt
that
it is an os specific problem as the os isn't loaded in that mode. I think
that it
is an os AND a hardware specific
problem, the os probably queries the hardware for the battery status and
gets told that the voltage is too low or something.
As Dr. Newton specifically mentions this as one of the repairs he can do,
this is very likely a hardware bug. Assuming that he doesn't have an
unlimited
amount of replacement mainboards, probably the culprit is replaceable.
Maybe this bug *can* be fixed by software, if you go into the diagnostic
mode,
you'll find strange things you can set. Also, there's the mysterious
diagnostic
card with might be useful here, who knows.
But I'm very sure that this is not a system only bug because re-installing
the
system is something one could easily do oneself.
But... now that I'm writing this... I just had the idea to stuff an old 1.3
ROM
from a 120 into one of these 130's and see if the problem persists. I'll
keep you
posted...
