Well, I've placed all 3 of the Lord of the Rings books
on a Newton browsable/downloadable site including The
Hobbit. You can get them by browsing to
http://newton.tek-ed.com/lotr
There is a login stipulation, but that's just for
protection...

BTW folks...you will be glad to know that I contacted
Tolkien enterprises for permission to publish the LOTR
and Hobbit in Newton format. They said that they
didn't see a problem, but that they weren't the
decision makers (they applauded me for taking the
extra precaution of the login requirement). I
contacted George Allen & Unwin LTD in England (the
original publishers of the stories) and Harbottle
Press in England (permission to reprint) and neither
expressed too much concern to persue the legality of
this issue. I then sent a letter to Newline
Productions (the current reprint authority) and have
heard nothing from them for over 6 months. (registered
letter and all) I believe I've performed due
dilligence on this matter and while their lack of
concern doesn't negate their rights, it certainly
weakens them somewhat (not to open up yet ANOTHER OT
here, reply privatly if you want to
bitch/complain/compliment) Their main concern was that
this wasn't a major public distribution (I've gotten
over 975 logins...not unique, but on average, I would
assume about 575 unique logins...that's probably the
worldwide contingent of Newton owners left!
Downloads have slowed somewhat, but I still get a
login or three every month...
I'm trying to get permission to post
Simlarilion...I'll let you folks know how I fare.

Other books I've placed on my personal server for my
own personal use (remember, it's for MY OWN personal
use, so don't read them) at
http://newton.tek-ed.com/books
This also includes several that I created myself!

This is a somewhat funny story.
I was big into books when growing up. I approached a
local used bookstore with a proposition. I was able to
get books free (my father worked for the airlines, so
they kept books that flyers left on the airplanes if
not claimed in 30 days. After we've all had a chance
to read them, I took them to the used bookstore for
credit)
But I didn't want book credit. (well, not the way they
did it) so I asked them for a "free" shelf. I would
promise to keep this shelf stocked with paperbacks if
they would allow anyone who wanted to come into the
store and just take a book. No questions...It was
suggested to replace the book with one you no longer
needed, but that was not a stipulation of getting a
free book. Now this was in the end of the hippy days
of the '70s. The location of the used book store was
in a rather liberal square (Lake Anne center in Reston
frequented by many Hippies!) and the Free shelf soon
grew to an entire rack. People brought books that they
felt they wanted others to read. Soon, this rack
became like a "best-sellers" contingent of "what to
read" for the budding hippy/anarchist! It got so
popular, I didn't need to supply the rack (then 6
shelves of books) with anymore books...Soon after
though, the book store owner died and the free rack
was placed outside the closed store for givaways. 10
years later, the new tennant (a NEW book store) the
owner of the store says that he regularly opens up the
store in the morning with several dog-eared books
sitting in front of the door. When I told him my
story, he said that he would make sure to leave some
outside when he locked up at night for who ever wanted
them (at the time, Lake Anne was frequented by
homeless people and low income people)
I haven't been back in a while, so I don't know if
it's still going on, but it is a good story!
