Subject: Re: [NTLK] Data From Dead Newton
Thanks to everyone from the list for suggestions on how to get my dead
newton to
dump all the data.
Luckily, the Data Rescue package worked like a charm, so I was able
(eventually)
to get a backup of the data. However, it wouldn't backup the system
information,
so I had to do a incremental backup rather than a full raw backup. However,
the
data that it restored onto the the (new) Newton is full and complete as far
as I
can tell.
Thanks so much for all your help.

Hello,
The package installer I wrote was recently brought up again on this list. As I stated before, I have written a fully functional Newton Streamed Binary Object decoder before, but I was unable to use it due to some legal issues surrounding the authentication with the Newton. Now, I recall seeing somewhere on the web, a screenshot of a program that had connected successfully with the Newton.
Could this person please contact me so we can discuss this issue; basically, *any* Mac OS X NCU application cannot go anywhere (i.e. will not be able to connect with the Newton). I believe that it is only a minor issue; and the fact remains that Apple has already abandoned the Newton platform (although I wait for more elements of Newton Intelligence to appear in Mac OS X).
The addresses were: http://anrp.irulethe.net/newton/ - The package installer http://anrp.irulethe.net/newt/ - The libraries (Newton Binary Object Decoder and Newton Connection Library) Both are GPL libraries.
Thanks, Andrew Patrikalakis
(PS: Is it true that versions 1.0 and 1.1 of the iPod software had Breakout built in?)

Hi all--
Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the book Defying Gravity? There are several on ebay but they are part of Newton MP packages and I already have an MP 2100.
Thanks Rene

I think that up until recently, you could still buy it direct from the publisher. If you do a search in the NewtonTalk archive, you might be able to find an older message with all needed information.

Yep, breakout was an easter egg.
You had to go to the ' legal info' keep the select button pressed and then it would show up. Plays very wel with the scroll wheel.
I play it all the time when commuting by train.

does anyone have an extra casing for a 2100??
my 2100U's case cracked at the lid lock.. the retainer tab, right under the lid release, broke away, and there is a chunk of plastic missing.. this causes my lid to just flip open at will..
i'd really like to get a empty shell from a 2100 for it.. if anyone has one..
i remember that there was an auction on eBay about a few months ago, and there were a bunch of "dead" newton 2K/2100's for sale.. if i could buy one of those, to reconstruct my Newton, it would be great..
thanks all..
jim..

7.5.5 is a free update, but keep in mind most of its 'improvements' are for powermacs only, if ever I run a 68k machine on 7.5x I always use 7.5.3
Your quadra will run OS 8.1 if you like also.... depending on which model of quadra (obviously not the slow 610), it is a speedy and reliable OS.

Most probably the reason is the different pinout standard for the western (RJ10 or 4P4C) connectors in US and Germany.
If you look at the connector, pins looking up, the pins are counted from left to right 4 3 2 1.
german pinout standard is: 4=b2 3=Lb 2=La 1=a2 (you need b2 and a2) US pinout standard is: 4=Lb 3=b2 2=a2 1=La
you can easily see that the german standard uses the outer connector pins while the US standard uses the inner pins - perfect mismatch.
Instead of dealing with another adaptor I would rather prepare the cable to get the right connections, that means to cross the inner wires with the outer ones. (should be easy since the wires usually have different colors) You need a new western connector and an appropriate tool to crimp the cable. Maybe you can find somebody to lend you such a tool
Good luck!

Listers I give up. I tried all the FAQ.s/How To.s - Newton Ethernet Explained/Ethernet Information- (and more) I can lay my hands on to get my MP2k to talk to my PB5300, to no avail. I used to get a chooser error, but now I only get a 'Looking for Mac OS computers' message until time-out. A similar Q was asked about a year ago, but the ans. is meaningless, to me at least. If someone is already awake (most Europeans should be?), plse. respond directly to my e-address above <ara_at_dwaf.pwv.gov.za>. I'm really desperate. Have been trying for days now. One Q: do I need the internet set-up? One how-to suggest this. I tried both the auto & manual settings with no success. I have no reason to doubt the 3c589d Etherlink III card, neither the x-over cable not to work. My GV Pt Pro card on the PB is also OK (used it to send this email). thanks for any HELP

No no, no reason to give up. It is proven that the 3c589d works with the Newt. At least for me :-))
I try to give you a check list: 1) are the right extensions installed? I use FarallonEthernet.pkg -> Farallon Enet on the Newt 3ComAddon.pkg -> z3Comdrv:clli on the Newt 2) in setup/prefs/AppleTalk you should have set "connect using Ethertalk" and the card selection should show your 3c589d card 3) dumb but important: in order to "see" your Mac in the dock application you need to have NCU UP AND RUNNING and configured for Ethernet 4) there is a nice application which you can use to check if the Newton Ethernet connection works: Netnames (you can find it on Unna) with this tool you can ping known machines and watch the reply 5) But I think for that application you need to have NIE and its Ethernet module installed and have a proper setup with IP address, netmask and so on. 6) this is on the MAC side: in order to get NCU functioning you need some extensions that come with NCU: namely the Appletalk ADSP module. Do not activate the AppleScript extensions that come with NCU on newer OS versions 8.6 and newer. 7) hardware: how do you connect your Newt to your Mac? - direct or via Hub or via local network/switch) direct connection needs a special cable (Rx and Tx lines crossed)
Thats so far what I remind on that topic.
