Ah yes. Jaggies. My favorite topic. :-(
>1a) MessagePad model and detailed indication of physical condition
>(especially case and screen)
case and screen near pristine (one chip in the case right next to the IR
window, and a slight bulge from the SER-001 installation)
>1b) MessagePad power sources used when Jaggies were experienced (AA

Apple NiMH battery or AC adapter
>1c) PCMCIA cards used when Jaggies were experienced
Varying combinations of None, 32MB flash RAM, 3COM Ethernet, or Lucent WaveLAN.
>2a) What region(s) of the screen Jaggies were experienced in
Started in lower right corner only. Now has spread to other regions.

no

no

no

no. Even if I lift my hand completely off the case and only contact the
Newton with the tip of the stylus, I still get jaggies.

I have noticed no correlation between any of these.
>3b) Whether or not you tried "separating/cleaning" the space between

yes. jaggies got worse when I tried inserting a card between the case and
touchscreen near the door latch, so I removed it.

yes. I cleaned the contacts on that ribbon AND the contacts on the
motherboard with a DeOxIt pen. Actually made the jaggies worse.
>3d) Other "solutions" you tried, and the results
To isolate my jaggies from any software problem, I tried doing a complete
brainwipe and testing with a barebones (no software installed) system. No
effect on jaggies.

My very first Newton had started to develop jaggies, and the screen was
pretty well worn anyway, so I had Apple replace it (touchscreen and
backlight). This was probably circa 1999. The jaggies went away, and have
never come back on that Newton.
My two subsequently purchased Newtons both have jaggies as described above.
I have ordered one of Calvin's replacement touchscreen/backlights and will
attempt to have that installed once it arrives. I hope that will cure my
jaggies. If it doesn't, I'm on the verge of throwing all my Newtons into
the SF Bay and ridding myself of this curse forever.

Thank you for compiling this data. I hope you find something useful.
