I have made a driver for the 3C589x card for MacOS 7.5 - 9.1 a long long =
time=20
ago. No, I didn't write one from scratch, I'm not a Mac developer.

A warning at the beginning for the impatient: Under no circumstances just=
 drop=20
the driver file into the system folder. If you do that, you system will n=
o=20
longer boot and you're hosed!!! I did that a few times and there was no w=
ay=20
to get the machine to boot, after I did it. The first time was by acciden=
t,=20
the subsequent times, because I wanted to find out how I could recover.
The Farallon Installer will modify some system resources in addition to=20
installing the driver.

The steps are:
1. Download the Driver version 2.2 from Farallon for their PC card (I thi=
nk=20
it's PN595). Do NOT use version 3.0, it's not going to work!
2. Install this driver
3. Copy the Farallon Driver file in the extension folder to a different f=
ile=20
(like 3C589Driver or something).=20
4. Use a binary editor like ResEdit 2.x and open the copied file and sear=
ch=20
for the pattern 'aral' (without the quotes) but ignore occurences of=20
Farallon. If you feel, you made a mess, quit ResEdit and copy the file ag=
ain=20
from the original and start at step 4 again. I actually used Norton Disk=20
Editor to edit the file the first time I did this.
5. Change the string to 'Com ' (last character is a space).
6. Save this new file and reboot your system

The card should now be recognized.

I figured, the Farallon card is an OEM version of the 3Com, after I spott=
ed=20
the 'Parallel Tasking' logo on one of them. Looks like I was right ;-).

Best regards,
Chris
