I got the impression that somehow the copyright on the NIV translation
discourages some from using it; almost as if some people were
interpreting the copyright as having some kind of malicious intent!
Consider that most of the Linux kernel and GNU toolset freely in use and
distribution today is covered by many copyrights. The copyright serves
to protect the work, and there's no reason to deny Bible translations
that protection. It ensures that quotations and copies are controlled
according to their intention of preserving the translation, giving due
credit to the translators, etc.
It's a simple process to go through to request non-commercial copying
permission from the Internation Bible Society and/or Zondervan. For
