"Apple founder backs 'revolutionary' PDA
Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak is backing the new HipTop PDA to
'revolutionise the world' when it debuts this spring.
HipTop is a wireless PDA and phone that provides Internet access,
instant messaging, email with attachments, personal information
management (PIM), such as a calendar and address book, and an
optional digital camera add-on.
The device measures 116 x 65 x 28mm - 'about the size of a small
pager' - and weighs a mere 150g, in which you get a 240 x 160 pixel
screen. Flipping up the screen reveals a QWERTY 'thumb' keyboard and
a directional pad for on-screen navigation. This pad and a scroll
wheel replace the stylus that is the traditional navigation tool for
handheld devices.
The HipTop has its own proprietary operating system and will use GSM
and GPRS networks for its wireless communication, though details of
any deals have yet to be announced. Nor is it known whether or when
it will be available outside the US.
The HipTop has already garnered an award, winning 'Best Of Show' for
handhelds at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
Wozniak first saw the device last year and was so impressed with it
and the company that he joined the board, a rare venture into a world
where he is often - and maybe with somewhat misty eyes - viewed as a
high priest of radical technology. Wozniak has been awarded the US's
National Medal of Technology and inducted into the Inventors Hall of
Fame.
A PDF outlining the HipTop's features is available"
