I've never lost data from a hard drive. I've lost hard
drives, but I was always able to pull the data off of
them using over the counter applications (well, I did
have trouble with a bunch of machines, but those were
Macs. The Drives suffered from "Stiction"
http://www.edprint.demon.co.uk/se/stiction.html

I also recently lost a 45gb drive to platter-chatter,
and one 10gb partition was completly lost.
But using OnTrack's Easy Recovery Professional
Edition, I was able to fully recover the entire
partition. And using Norton's GHOST, I then GHOSTed
the rest of the drive onto a new replacement drive.

If your computer guys can't recover your drive, it is
more likely a problem with their lack of motivation or
their lack of knowledge as opposed to there not being
a way to do it.

And taking the automobile analogy to it's logical
point, if you purchase a Cadilac with the Northstar
system, they recommend that your first scheduled
maintenance not occur before 100,000 miles. They say
that if you have unscheduled maintenance before that
time that it will void your warrantee!
