Huh?!?
I've got four different ZIP drives that plug into 4
different Windows machines.
I plugged the SCSI Zip-100 drive directly into the
SCSI port of my Dell Dimension running Win2k. The
machine recognized it without having to load any
drivers and without having to reboot the machine.
Total installation time, less than 2 seconds (it took
one second to identify which way the SCSI plug was
oriented)
I was also able to plug this ZIp drive in my Win98
machine with an Adaptec SCSI card. After the drivers
were loaded for the Zip drive, and the machine was
rebooted, everything worked (and still works) fine!
Total installation time, less than 3 minutes.
I plugged my USB Zip-250 directly into the USB port on
my Dell Laptop Docking station (the laptop running
Win2k) and it recognized the Zip drive instantly!
Total installation time, one second. probably less...
I connected the parlallel Zip-100 into my wife's Dell
desktop and after installing the drivers (had to grab
new drivers from Iomega from their website) and
rebooted her machine it worked flawlessly! 5 minutes
to install (2 minutes to download the new software, 3
minutes to install)
Lastly, I purchased a used Dell laptop for my mom and
it came with a Zip drive that popped into one of the
bays (it works in either the floppy/CD bay or the
battery bay). I wiped the hard drive and put on
Win98SE. While the OS was running, I removed the CD
drive and popped in the ZIP drive. The ZIp drive was
instantly recognized. Total install time, 2 seconds
(had to tell the OS that the CD ROM was being removed
from the hot-swappable bay) In every instance, the
installation required no more than loading the
software, accepting the defaults and then rebooting
the computer...and that was the extreme! Total time
(not including reboot time) was less than 3 minutes!
If your installation takes longer, then you need to
approach the solution not from the OS side, but in how
you have your particular installation configured (I
know that some machines come equipped with the USB
ports disabled in BIOS...but that happens very rarely!
Oh, I just thought of a fifth machine that required me
to install a second parallel port on the machine, load
the drivers for that new port, then load the drivers
for the Zip drive, then reboot, plug in the drive and
everything works! total install time 10 minutes (had
to open the case and put in the new parallel card for
this one..) I rely heavily on Zip drives (it's my
preferred method of giving my parents updates to
applications that they are running...)
