so, a bit of progress.

  A) I think I have a valid IP address, so that should be OK.
  B) I do get a popup question asking "Accept cookies?" so I tap "Yes",
and then yesterday I was prompted for a username and password. Today I
was disconnected with a message 'client [403 forbidden ]
error:forbidden'
