just wanted to share this with my fellow newton users, dunno if they will
develop something PCMCIA-like, but it could be interesting to follow this
project closely for us...

New venture to develop joint GPRS and 802.11b chipset

Airify Communications and Helic S.A. have entered a partnership to
develop a new chipset that will offer the combined functionality of
GSM/GPRS Class 12 cellular and IEEE 802.11b (2.4-2.5 GHz) WLAN.
Bluetooth connectivity may also be offered as an additional feature on
the reference board. The two companies have undertaken to jointly
develop and market a two-chip solution that will combine Helic's HC5100,
a highly integrated silicon RF front-end IC, and Airify's A800, a
multi-standard convergence PHY/MAC IC. Samples and reference board
availability will be announced shortly by the partners.

Dr. Yorgos Koutsoyannopoulos, Helic's CEO, said about this new alliance:
"We are going to combine Helic's unique RF silicon and system-in-package
methodology with Airify's leading multi-standard baseband and MAC
technology. The chipset will offer unprecedented functionality to
integrators pursuing wireless convergence, enabling roaming among
indoors WLAN and outdoors cellular environments - all at a
bill-of-materials format that will be a pleasant surprise to OEMs and
operators".

Dominik Schmidt, CEO of Airify said, "This partnership is aimed at a
specific product with the lowest bill-of-materials for the protocol mix
we provide. By using the 2.4GHz band for 802.11b/g and Bluetooth, a
flexible solution is presented for OEMs looking to combine WLAN with
cellular connectivity. The ability to work with multiple standards rests
on a reconfigurable processor array as well as a flexible architectural
implementation that allows baseband software to be run at real-time
speeds. A smart routing algorithm automatically configures the product
to work with the best signal in any given area and route data packets
over the best wireless channel. Adding the Helic chip completes the
integration of the product, which could fit in a PDA, laptop or
cell-phone."
