Have you tried using PackType to set the correct type ?

Alternatively use ResEdit: launch ResEdit, click on the splash screen to
make it go away, close the open dialog, go to the File menu, choose Get
File/Folder Info..., select your package, and enter "pkg" in the Type field,
and "pkgX" in the Creator field. Close the box, select Save at the prompt,
et voila, your package will be recognised by NCU

PackType does this automatically - you just drag the file on to it. But I
can't remember where it comes from, and anyway, ResEdit is much more
exciting.... You can get it from:

ftp://ftp.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_
American/Macintosh/Utilities/ResEdit_2.1.3.sea.bin

Subject: [NTLK] Packages aren't recognized

I recently got a 3com ethernet card for my eMate. I'm trying to install the
packages using NCU. When I click on "Install Package" and navigate to where
the packages are, they aren't listed as options in the window. I don't know
why, but I can't get the eMate to recognize the necessary packages. Help!
I'm dying to use my ethernet card.

The Mac is a biege G3 running 9.2.1. All other NCU functions work fine, and
I have installed other packages in the past. I've included the packages
themselves incase anyone wants to have a look at them maybe tell me what's
going on. Much appreciation, this has been driving me insane.

Dave
