Have you tried to open 'Card' first, THEN insert the storage card??

For pity's sake, don't do just a serial connection. Do a tiny bit of
hunting and get two Phonenet connectors (and, of course, some phone wire to
connect them). That way you can connect at full AppleTalk speed.
