I sometimes wonder if the bad rap that PhoneNet got was from folks who tried
to use their existing, in-the-wall phone wiring, which might have been of
unknown provenance and quality. The ways I always saw this done were: 1)
when first wiring the office, have the phone guy put a second, dedicated
drop down while installing the primary phone line to an office; or 2) the
'clandestine' string-your-own-network-so-you-don't-have-to-mess-with-IT
scheme of climbing chairs and throwing coils of phone line down the hall
above the drop ceiling (using plenum-rated wiring, of course) and just
dangling the phone line in a corner of the office where it's not obviously
ugly. Either way, this worked just fine. Many was the time when all the
Wintels were dead in the water because they were all using Office off a
server that had crashed, while the Macs were sharing files, printing, and
generally being productive...
