    I don't have the XJ4288, but I'd assume it works with 28.8 and faster as
do most other USR/3Com modems. There may be a special driver or you might
want to try tweaking performance with modem modifier.
    The Montana works fine as well, but I found it a bit power hungry and
have switched to a Motorola Power 14.4 for landline and cell. If you have a
Motorola StarTAC or MicroTAC phone, the Montana is a good bet for cell. I
found I got a more solid connection than with the USR/3Com modems (the
Montana was made to work with those phones though).
    As for speed, I've found there is little difference on the Newt between
a good 14.4 and a 56K modem because the Newt can only process data so fast
and the slower modem draws a lot less power.
