On my wifes computer (I think she got WinNT) it was necessary to run 4
instances of slowdown.exe and 'tune' them to produce about 95% CPU load in
TaskManager. W/o that base load NCU failed.

It could also be that you have a corrupted package or data on your Newton.
This might trigger the -1 error too. In this case debugging w/o working
connection is very hard. Because on the Mac you can exclude connection
errors reliably you might give Basilisk II a try. At least for finding the
culprit it might be worth trying.
