I think there is certainly some request coming up soon. Considering a
lifetime of about 5...10 years of an accu pack the number of dying accu
packs should steadily increase.

This would be not very promising to be honest. I wrote my opinion before and
will repeat it now again, sorry for bothering:
It makes not much sense to recondition since the aging of accus is sort of
irreversible. Refurbishing, that is replacement of the cells by
state-of-the-art 1700mAh type is the way to go. Frank Gruendel showed what
and how to do.

Such an (refurbished) accu pack provides about 155% capacity of the original
pack and thus gives about a week of use w/o battery warning and normal use
of the Newton (whatever that is :-)
The refurbished accu pack would have to be as expensive as a new original
accu pack if not cheaper (35USD?).
